Finland - Sautéed Reindeer

Poronkäristys - A hearty comfort food with a distinct flavour.

It was super fitting that our Finland challenge followed Estonia as our first visit to Finland was a day trip to Helsinki from Tallinn. It was our first boat trip into a (new) country which added to the excitement. I'm not sure I had any expectations on that trip but what we did get made for a memorable and hilarious trip - the city centre, south harbour and all around senate square & the Christmas Markets smelt heavily of fish. Pretty sure this was due to the Christmas Market Stalls themselves and the huge amount of fish available but Baby Leaps had a really hard time since she hates fish and being the loving sisters we are, Nah Leaps and I laughed the whole time and made sure we stuck around the fishy epicentre for as long as possible.

The Challenge: Poronkäristys - Because we weren't sure if we had eaten Reindeer before, we needed to avoid fish & it sounded yum.

As always we had a no fish policy here and since we all love a meat, gravy & mash combo reindeer was the ticket. The only horrible thing about this dish is that it needs to cook slowly and the delicious smell throughout the day was torture.
